Geoje Haegeumgang Cruise — Between Seagulls and Cliffs

I took a cruise to Haegeumgang while visiting Geoje Island.

As soon as the boat left the harbor, seagulls gathered around us as if they had been waiting. They flew close to the hands holding snacks, and for a while I watched the birds more than the sea.

The seagulls followed the boat beneath a clear blue sky, while a long trail of white wake stretched behind us. The weather was excellent, making the colors of the sea and islands look especially vivid.

The scenery changed completely as we approached Haegeumgang. Massive rock cliffs rose almost vertically from the water, and from up close every layer and texture of the stone became visible.

When the boat passed beside the cliffs, I had to tilt my head far back to see the tops. They felt much larger and more imposing than they ever looked in photographs. The trees growing from narrow cracks in the rock were just as striking.

It was enjoyable both to watch the seagulls and sea through the cabin window and to stand on deck in the wind, looking up at the cliffs.

This was a memorable way to experience the coastal scenery of Geoje. Haegeumgang was far more impressive from a boat at close range than it would have been from land.
